Gay Cruising Mobile Guide: Scruff

After Grindr took over the gay community, an app that appeared to represent the “typical” Chelsea boys at that time – smooth skin, trimmed or shaved – body hair and muscular bodies and the fashion elite. Then came along Scruff, an app that represented the entire community especially men who are scruff-y, hairy, and the men who love them.

SCRUFF – Founded by Johnny Skandros with his business partner Eric Silverberg, the app pulls up in a global setting so you can see men from a few feet away to 1000 miles. You can click on nearby to meet men within your area/neighborhood.

Pros:

• Photo Album: upload g-rated to x-rated pics to your photo album and share it with guys of your choice. Enable and disable at any time.
• Favorites: Save profiles of your favorites guys that you’ve met or would like to meet.
• Messages: Easy to navigate and the most recent remain at the top. 
• Received Album: In the top right corner, is a picture frame icon to represent your album folder, within this folder has 3 options:

1.  Received Album – guys who you unlocked their private album, 
2.  Private Album – where your personal pics are stored 
3. Archive – albums/pics can be stored

• Woofs & Viewers: In this folder, a 3-person icon in the top right hand corner, has several options

1. Woofs – guys who give you a catcall or whistle at your profile
2. Viewers – guys who have checked out your profile
3. Woof’d – guys who you have woofed or catcalled – only available in Scruff Pro
4. Viewed – guys profiled that you have viewed – only available in Scruff Pro

• Go Offline/Online: VERY IMPORTANT FEATURE – Located in your Settings, this feature allows you to go off the radar when you’re not available to chat or hookup. In this day and age, a delay in response could be consider a sign of dislike or rude behavior. So this feature allows you to avoid appearing like a douche or asshole.
• He Is: Under the Scruff logo in the upper left hand corner, you can change your view settings to be more specific and narrow your search down
• Events: Scruff advertises and promotes events in your area and around the world
• Message Notifications: THE MOST IMPORTANT FEATURE OF THEM ALL: They send a Scruff Msg with a small text to your phone with the guys profile name. Grindr only buzzes or rings to notify you of messages which you may or may not receive. 
• Insight: Location in the lower right hand corner of every profile except for the guys who have Scruff Pro and gives you an indication of how often or how rare does the guy responds to messages. They use a metric-system to study habits of its users   

• Would You Meet: Gives guys the options of the app to show or feature guys that you may be interested by your rating of Not My Type, Maybe and Definitely. If there’s a match then both parties would be notified, *It’s best to mention it in your profile.*

Cons:

• The only con is that this app gets looked over by Grindr-users and is underrated in my opinion as THE BEST gay mobile social app. 
• Travel Mode – Only available in Pro *For guys visiting in different parts of the world that don’t have Pro, Please make sure you mention when your visiting areas to increase your odds of hooking up. Guys will jump on the opportunity to hook up with you because a) they will be afraid of missing out, b) feeling the pressure of you getting attached is very low.

Scruff Pro: Features unlimited filters, messages, albums, videos, stats, stealth mode, travel mode and many more

Clientele: For those of you not familiar with gay terminologies to describe hairy men or self-describe here are a few terms:

• Cub: a small, usually young, hairy guy. passive/submissive partner
• Bear: a large, usually older, hairy guy very masculine. active/dominant partner
• Otter: a slim and hairy guy
• Wolf: an aggressive hairy guy who usually muscular or very fit
• Chaser: anyone that prefer or go after a person for a specific aesthetic in this case a hairy guy.

Other terms include

• Chub: overweight hairy guy usually tall in stature
• Ewok: short, round and hairy

 As you may conclude, I love Scruff. I enjoy the other apps as well. However, my success rate is much higher with Scruff.
